Pre-operative Counseling

Pre-operative counseling is offered to patients undergoing surgical resection for head and neck cancer and requires a referral from the physician. The speech-language pathologist (SLP) will evaluate current speech and/or swallowing function and prepare the patient for changes that will occur after surgery.  This appointment usually takes ~ 1 hour. For patients having the voice box removed (total laryngectomy), education will focus on the changes that will occur with breathing, swallowing, and voicing. For more information, click here.
